Stormwater Management System for the Thermi Expansion Area
Consortis possesses advanced expertise in hydraulic engineering, delivering integrated solutions to complex technical challenges. Under the contract with Municipal Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage of Thermi, Consortis was responsible for preparing the general final design for the stormwater drainage network in the expansion area of Thermi Municipality.
The Challenge
This project represents a complex hydraulic undertaking designed to provide effective flood protection for an area of approximately 3.5 square kilometres that is undergoing significant urban expansion. The primary scope is to implement a long-term solution to persistent flooding issues that occur during periods of heavy rainfall and impact the local transportation infrastructure.
The Solution
Consortis' study incorporates several core elements into the proposed design:
- The new drainage network collects stormwater through strategically placed collection manholes and conveys it via an underground gravity network to the region's natural watercourses.
- The network consists of 49 distinct pipelines, collectively spanning over 26 kilometers and concluding at 45 designated discharge locations within the watercourses.
- Pipes are constructed by double-walled polypropylene, while high-flow zones utilize box culverts made of reinforced concrete.
- Two collector pipes have been installed to effectively manage runoff from external catchment areas, thereby mitigating the risk of flooding on residential streets.
- The design utilizes detailed topographical surveying, geotechnical assessment, and hydrological-hydraulic studies, incorporating updated storm curves from Flood Risk Management Plans.
- The network is based on the principle of free-flow by gravity.
- Inspection manholes are placed at maximum intervals of 60 metres; drop manholes are provided in steep sections to dissipate kinetic energy and prevent turbulent flow.
- Gabion baskets are installed at pipeline discharge points to protect stream beds from erosion, and ensure integration with the natural landscape.
- By integrating heritage preservation with utility planning, the project supports sustainable development and community values.
Benefits
The project yields the following significant outcomes:
- Provides robust flood protection, improves safety for local residents, and contributes to the overall value of the region.
- Preserves infrastructure and the surrounding environment.
- Ensures compliance with contemporary water resource management and environmental standards.
- Establishes infrastructure to support future expansion or upgrades as required.
- Facilitates sustainable development within Thermi Municipality, improving quality of life and increasing property values.
