World Water Day – Consortis’ Strategy: Resilient Infrastructure in a Changing World

World Water Day, observed every year on March 22, now arrives less as a celebration and more as a reminder of a harsh reality: water can no longer be taken for granted. We are living through a transitional period in which the hydrological cycle has been profoundly disrupted—prolonged droughts alternate unpredictably with destructive floods, and hydrological data once considered reliable are now constantly being reassessed.

In Greece, the challenge is twofold. Our geomorphology, the uneven distribution of water resources between mainland and island regions, and aging infrastructure require more than simple management; they demand visionary planning. In this critical field, the Hydraulic Works Department of CONSORTIS does not remain a spectator but actively contributes to strengthening the country’s resilience.

Our approach goes beyond conventional engineering studies. We combine technical expertise with advanced hydraulic simulation tools, systematically integrating climate change scenarios into design assumptions. This is not a theoretical exercise—it is demonstrated in practice through major projects. The technical advisory services for supplying Florina with water from the Triantafyllia Dam—a complex water transfer and treatment project—will help safeguard the quality of life for thousands of citizens.

At the same time, safety remains a priority. Following the devastating wildfires of 2023, we were commissioned to design flood protection works east of Alexandroupolis, where deforestation has created new runoff conditions and increased flood risk. In parallel, we are preparing stream delineation and stormwater management studies in the rapidly developing area of Thermi—where urban expansion intersects with natural hydrographic networks and prevention becomes a reality long before disaster strikes.

For us at CONSORTIS, water security is not merely a technical issue. It is a matter of social cohesion and economic sustainability. Through scientifically grounded solutions, resilient infrastructure, and long-term strategic planning, we transform the uncertainty of our era into sustainable planning for the future.
