2nd Prize in the Ideas Competition for the Strategic Spatial Development of the Trichonida Lake Area
Consortis received the 2nd Prize in the open Spatial Planning Ideas Competition “Study of the Strategic Spatial Development of the Trichonida Lake Area” organized by the Regional Development Fund of the Region of Western Greece.
The Problem
The Trichonida Lake area, with its remarkable natural and cultural environment, faces challenges in sustainable development and utilization. Strategic planning is necessary to highlight the natural landscape, connect the lake with neighboring local communities, and contribute to the economic growth and development of the Municipalities of Agrinio and Thermo.
The Solution
The vision proposed by Consortis' study team for the Trichonida Lake area is described as “The formation of a balanced natural, human, and socio-economic landscape that is interconnected, complementary, and functions on multiple levels.”
This vision is based on the triptych “Creation-Preservation-Empowerment” and is structured around the following Strategic Goals:
- Creation of new opportunities for recreation and soft tourism: Leveraging the natural and human-made environment
- Preservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage: Highlighting ecological and cultural values
- Empowerment of the productive landscape: Strengthening local advantages to ensure economic resilience
The proposal follows a place-based approach, emphasizing the unique characteristics of the area with a focus on networking and complementarity.
Key Design Tools
The study's philosophy is grounded in Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI), supporting networking, multifunctionality, and environmental sustainability. The strategic framework includes three steps: identification, functional evaluation, and formation of a network based on the following structural elements:
- Areas: Zones of increased protection or development
- Corridors/Links: Networks of cycling and walking paths
- Transition Points: Rest areas and observation points
The proposal combines heightened protection for ecologically sensitive areas with human activities such as tourism and recreation.
Design and Construction Interventions
The proposal includes soft interventions with a low environmental footprint:
- Light structures: Refreshment kiosks, storage spaces, and observation points with energy autonomy
- Mobile infrastructure: For periodic activities and events
- Pathway networks: Constructed with natural, highly permeable materials
