Comprehensive Technical Support for Traffic Planning and Regulation in the Platytera Monastery Area, Corfu

Consortis, drawing on its extensive expertise and long-standing experience in traffic engineering and road safety studies, undertook the preparation of a traffic regulation study for the area surrounding Platytera Monastery, located in the central urban zone of the city of Corfu.

The study aims to document and assess the existing traffic conditions of the local road network and to develop a comprehensive and coherent traffic regulation plan tailored to the area’s specific characteristics and needs.

The Challenge

The study area is bounded by Corfu–Palaiokastritsa Road (Secondary National Road), Ioulia Andreadi Street (Secondary National Road), Alexandrou Panagouli Street (Municipal Road), and Miltiadou Margariti Street (Primary Provincial Road). It is situated in a highly frequented and strategically important part of the city, where the current traffic layout presents significant challenges.

These challenges include increased traffic congestion, disrupted vehicle flow, and limited parking availability. As a result, both through traffic and local users—residents and visitors alike—experience difficulties, with negative impacts on road safety, quality of life, and tourism activity in the area.

The Solution

The Transportation Infrastructure Planning Department of Consortis implemented the study through the following key actions:

  • A detailed survey and evaluation of existing traffic conditions were conducted, forming the basis for targeted proposals aimed at optimizing traffic flow and improving parking management.
  • Traffic counts were carried out to record current traffic volumes. The collected data are compared with corresponding data from the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), ensuring consistency with broader mobility planning objectives.
  • A traffic signage and road safety study was prepared in accordance with the applicable Guidelines for Road Design Studies (OMOE), enabling the implementation of optimal and compliant traffic regulation measures.

Benefits

The implementation of the proposed measures is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and improve overall quality of life in the Platytera Monastery area. The reorganization of traffic circulation and parking will lead to smoother, safer, and more predictable vehicle movements, benefiting both permanent residents and visitors.

With a strong focus on area enhancement and in close cooperation with local stakeholders, the Consortis team applies modern analytical tools and best practices to ensure that the proposed traffic plan responds effectively to real user needs. At the same time, it promotes sustainable urban mobility and ensures the optimal functionality and safety of the road network in the heart of the city of Corfu.
