Effective Flood Management in Stavros, Municipality of Volvi: A Strategic Approach
The area of Stavros, in the Municipality of Volvi, faces increased flood risks due to inadequate hydraulic infrastructure, urban development, and overburdened natural watercourses. Heavy rainfall often leads to overflows, causing property damage and threatening residents' safety.
The Problem
The area exhibited the following critical issues:
✔ Lack of adequate infrastructure for stormwater drainage
✔ Uncontrolled urban development, which affected the natural flow of water
✔ Inability of existing pipelines and watercourses to handle extreme weather events
The Solution by Consortis
To address the problem, Consortis leveraged the advanced capabilities of GeoHECRAS & HEC-RAS 6.6, designing a comprehensive flood protection plan:
- Modeling of 6.37 km of natural and artificial streams for an accurate recording of water flow
- Analysis of extreme rainfall scenarios, simulating the behavior of hydraulic systems
- Proposed interventions, including three retention dams with controlled outflows and hydraulic channels of closed and open cross-sections to optimize water drainage
The Benefits
✔ 30% increase in drainage capacity, reducing flood risk
✔ Protection of over 1,000 homes, minimizing flood-prone areas
✔ Environmental adaptation, respecting protected areas (Natura 2000) and using environmentally friendly techniques
