Evaluation and Interoperability of Flood Protection Measures in the Strymonas River Basin

Consortis, through its specialized Hydraulic Studies Department, undertook the evaluation of the performance and interoperability of flood protection intervention measures in the Strymonas River Basin. This project is part of the program "Flood Protection - Cross Border Planning and Infrastructure Measures for Flood Protection", funded by the European Territorial Cooperation Program "INTERREG V-A Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020."

The Problem

The Strymonas River Basin faces significant challenges from recurring floods that cause environmental, social, and economic consequences. Existing infrastructure often fails to adequately protect both the human and natural environment. A coordinated approach between Greece and Bulgaria is required to effectively manage flood risks in this cross-border region.

The Solution

Consortis, leveraging its expertise in hydraulic projects, has developed a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Upgrading Protection Infrastructure: Improving existing flood protection infrastructure and constructing new ones in high-risk areas
  • Impact Analysis: Conducting quantitative and qualitative assessments of the effects of protection measures
  • Strategic Planning: Creating an integrated Master Plan for the management of the ecosystem and local infrastructure
  • Mobile Barrier Guide: Developing an innovative guide for the application of modular mobile flood barriers

The Benefits

The implementation of the "Flood Protection" project is expected to deliver multiple benefits, such as:

  • Environmental Protection: Managing and reducing flood risks to safeguard the natural ecosystem
  • Enhanced Safety: Increasing the sense of security for residents in the cross-border region
  • Mitigation of Impacts: Reducing social and economic impacts caused by floods
  • Awareness and Preparedness: Educating the population and enhancing their ability to respond to emergency flood events
  • Cross-Border Cooperation: Promoting coordinated actions between Greece and Bulgaria for effective flood risk management

The project was completed with the creation of a Master Plan, a contemporary management tool for the region, as well as a roadmap for future interventions. Additionally, the innovative use of mobile barriers provides a unique model of flood protection for the area.

The 12-month project was completed in January 2022, reaffirming Consortis’ commitment to sustainable development and the efficient management of natural resources.
