Feasibility Study for the Creation of Landfills (MSW and Hazardous Waste) in the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki
Consortis served as a consultant in an innovative project to assess the feasibility of establishing Municipal Solid Waste Landfills (MSW) and Hazardous Waste Landfills (HWL) in the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki (MAT). The project was carried out in collaboration with the contractor EPTA S.A., where Consortis contributed its expertise and experience in waste management as a subcontractor.
The Problem
The Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki faces significant challenges in solid waste management, particularly for industrial and hazardous waste. These challenges impact environmental sustainability and compliance with national and European legislation. A comprehensive plan required evaluating the feasibility and environmental, social, and economic parameters for the establishment of suitable MSW and HWL facilities.
The Solution
The Environment & Energy Department of Consortis worked closely with the contractor EPTA S.A., providing specialized consultancy services:
- Feasibility Analysis: Evaluation of geographic, environmental, and technical criteria for the siting of MSW and HWL facilities
- Regulatory Framework Review: Analysis of legal and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with national and European legislation
- Waste Management Policy Design: Support in developing integrated waste management strategies, taking into account general guidelines and the specific needs of the area
