Highlighting the European Trail E6 in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace A Project of Culture, Nature, and Sustainable Development

As Technical Consultant, Consortis played a pivotal role in preparing the maturity file for the project: “Enhancement and Utilization of the European Trail E6 in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (R.E.M.T.).” This initiative is a strategic intervention that brings together culture, the natural environment, and regional development, transforming a major international hiking route into a driver of sustainable tourism and local revitalization.

The Challenge

Despite its international significance and the rich natural and cultural landscapes it traverses, the European Trail E6 remained largely underutilized in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The absence of clear signage, infrastructure, and strategic planning hindered its potential as a tourism asset and a tool for regional development.

The Solution

Consortis implemented a comprehensive plan focused on documentation, mapping, and study preparation to support the trail’s development. Key actions included:

  • Documentation Report: A detailed recording of the route, including analysis of elevation profiles, slopes, and key waypoints
  • Thematic GIS Mapping: Creation of a specialized map illustrating the proposed route through the region, highlighting areas of cultural and environmental significance
  • Stakeholder Engagement: A participatory approach involving local and regional stakeholders to foster ownership and support for the project
  • Tender Documents for Studies: Preparation of technical specifications for future studies related to trail planning, promotion, and enhancement, in alignment with national and EU standards

The Benefits

The project unlocks a wide range of benefits for the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace:

  • Promotion of Sustainable Tourism: Establishment of an alternative, eco-friendly tourism route that highlights the region’s unique assets
  • Economic Development: Boost to local entrepreneurship through increased tourism activity, supporting hospitality, retail, and local product sectors
  • Cultural and Environmental Preservation: Enhanced protection and promotion of the region’s natural and cultural heritage
  • Community Connectivity: Strengthened collaboration between municipalities and regions under a common vision for sustainable development
