Redevelopment of Urban Areas of the Municipality of Maroussi with Focus on Accessibility & Mobility

The project concerns the regeneration of the urban planning units PE-8 Ag. Anargyroi and PE-7 Social Housing area, which constitutes a large part of the Municipality of Marousi. The study includes the redesign of a network of roads and sidewalks, institutionalized non-implemented pedestrian streets as well as a number of open public spaces.

The area incorporates building units with heterogeneous uses. The current situation is characterized by a lack of overall planning, a lack of homogeneity in the image of the area, a lack of urban equipment and significant operational problems. In addition, the area lacks basic accessibility infrastructure for vulnerable social groups, while public spaces show an overall deterioration.

The Consortis team undertook the redesign of a large number of roads and sidewalks, pedestrian streets and open spaces within the study area. The study includes a complete architectural redesign, transportation arrangements, design of new electric lighting, new urban equipment and plantings.

Approach

The study focuses on ensuring accessibility for vulnerable groups and on upgrading the road axes, prioritizing functionality and accessibility for all users of the roads and open spaces, while at the same time aiming at the aesthetic and bioclimatic upgrade of the area. The traffic characteristics of the area are being reviewed and improved for pedestrians and vehicles. The main objective is to create a single accessible network for pedestrians and people with disabilities and to provide active public spaces for residents and visitors. The redesigned squares and open spaces are integrated into the urban fabric and are addressed to users of different ages and characteristics. They receive uses for rest, recreation and sports activities and become poles of social contact.

Through appropriate handling and selection of materials and plantings, emphasis was placed on environmental design and on improving the microclimate and thermal comfort conditions.

Benefits
