Road Safety in the Northern Part of Halkidiki

The project focused on addressing issues in the road network of the northern part of Halkidiki, aiming to improve road safety and reduce high-accident concentration areas. The total network length (National and Provincial) amounts to 205 kilometers, with roads belonging to the Trans-European Corridors excluded from the study.

The project included:

  • Recording, investigation, and identification of failures in the road environment
  • Processing and analysis of recorded data
  • Derivation of conclusions and drafting proposals for appropriate interventions

The Problem

The existing road network in the northern part of Halkidiki presents:

  • Failures in the road environment: Deficiencies that increase accident risks
  • High accident concentration: Locations with frequent traffic accidents
  • Lack of short- and medium-term interventions: Insufficient measures to manage issues
  • Incomplete data recording and analysis: Limited knowledge for effective intervention

The Solution

The study proposed:

  • Recording and mapping road environment issues to identify risk points
  • Analyzing traffic accident data to determine causes and patterns
  • Drafting proposals for short- and medium-term interventions
    • Improving signage and lighting
    • Road widening and reconstruction
    • Interventions at hazardous curves and intersections

Benefits

  • Reduction in traffic accidents: Addressing high-risk locations
  • Increased road safety: Through targeted interventions
  • Better traffic management: Streamlining vehicle flow
  • Support for the local economy: Improving accessibility and safety

This study represents a significant step toward upgrading Halkidiki’s road network, contributing to enhanced safety and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
