Special Urban Planning Framework for the Coastal Areas of Pieria
The project involves the preparation of a Special Urban Planning Framework (SUPF) for the coastal areas of Pieria, encompassing the municipalities of Dion-Olympus, Katerini, and Pydna-Kolindros. The SUPF is accompanied by a Strategic Environmental Impact Study (SEIS) and a Geological Study, with provisional stream delineation studies planned where necessary. The project commenced in December 2023, commissioned by the Ministry of Environment & Energy, with the Technical Chamber of Greece serving as the contracting authority.
The Problem
The coastal areas of Pieria face challenges that include:
- Rational land use management
- Balanced development between urban and non-urban areas
- Protection of environmentally sensitive and cultural heritage sites
- Development of infrastructure to support the local economy and quality of life
Establishment of a clear institutional framework for spatial development
Solution
The SUPF will propose:
- The allocation of human and natural activities in space based on principles of sustainable development
- The depiction of the desired spatial evolution through maps and regulations
- Strengthened synergies among productive sectors and the provision of social infrastructure
Protection of natural resources and prevention of natural and technological risks
Benefits
- Institutional Framework: Secures organized spatial planning with regulated land uses
- Balanced Development: Rational distribution of urban and non-urban areas, emphasizing public spaces and social infrastructure
- Local Economy: Strengthens productive sectors and enhances the area's attractiveness for residence and business activities
- Environmental Protection: Preserves ecological resources and minimizes risks
- Quality of Life: Improves traffic conditions and technical infrastructure, making daily life more convenient
- Identity Enhancement: Highlights the area's comparative advantages, boosting its appeal to residents, investors, and visitors
With the completion of the SUPF, the region will gain a modern planning tool to guide its development for the next 15 years.
