The Study for the Improvement of the At-Grade Intersection on the Old National Road (PΕΟ) Athens – Thessaloniki
The study focuses on the improvement of the at-grade intersection between the Old National Road (PΕΟ) Athens – Thessaloniki and the local roads leading to the settlements of Mikro Monastiri and Adendro. The goal of the study is to upgrade the existing infrastructure in terms of road safety and surface quality, preventing excessive speeding and reducing the risk of fatal traffic accidents.
The Problem
The current at-grade intersection faces the following challenges:
- Low surface quality: Degradation of the road pavement
- Increased risk of traffic accidents: Due to excessive speeding
- Lack of appropriate signage: Insufficient horizontal and vertical markings
- Inadequate infrastructure: Including the existing irrigation canal
The Solution
The proposed solution includes:
- Construction of a single-lane roundabout with four access branches, a central island, and maneuver arrangements on the PΕΟ branches
- Implementation of appropriate horizontal and vertical signage
- Expansion of the technical structure of the existing irrigation canal
- General improvement of road infrastructure and surface quality for motorized traffic
Benefits
- Enhanced road safety: Reduction in traffic accidents and improved traffic conditions
- Smoother traffic flow: Achieved through the design of the roundabout
- Upgraded infrastructure: Improvement of the road network and accompanying facilities
- Speed reduction: Mitigation of dangerous driver behavior through design features
This study represents a significant step toward improving the road infrastructure in the area, contributing to accident reduction and enhanced travel quality.
