Traffic and Road Design Studies for the Egnatia Motorway Network
Consortis delivers targeted transport planning interventions that enhance road safety, operational efficiency, and everyday mobility. This project focuses on the upgrade of the Souroti Junction, a key traffic node serving through traffic along National Road EO16 and providing access to the wider local road network.
The Challenge
The existing junction is a four-leg at-grade intersection with overlapping left-turn movements, accommodating traffic to and from Souroti via National Road EO16, as well as access to local roads. High travel speeds along EO16 limit drivers’ ability to recognize the intersection in time and to decelerate safely, resulting in elevated road safety risks.
The Solution
To address these challenges and ensure smooth, controlled traffic flow across all movements, the following design interventions are proposed:
- Conversion of the existing at-grade intersection into a single-lane roundabout.
- Introduction of gentle approach curvature to naturally reduce vehicle speeds prior to entry.
- Installation of a speed-reduction system to ensure timely deceleration and safe integration into the roundabout.
Benefits
The proposed geometric redesign and accompanying measures are expected to substantially reduce collision risk and enhance safety for all road users. Traffic flow will become smoother and more predictable, improving both through movement on EO16 and local access to Souroti and surrounding activities.
Through Consortis’ active involvement, each phase of the study is delivered with technical precision and consistency, contributing to the long-term improvement of traffic conditions in the area.
