Wastewater Management Study for the Lakeside Settlements of the Municipality of Kozani

Consortis, through its specialized Hydraulic Works Department, is implementing a project of strategic importance for the protection of the environment and the sustainable development of the Polyphytos Lake area.
The contract concerns the preparation of the Wastewater Management Study for the Lakeside Settlements of the Municipality of Kozani, which includes the comprehensive design of sewerage networks and wastewater treatment facilities serving the settlements of Ano Komi, Kato Komi, Kaisareia, Agia Paraskevi, Rymnio, and Petrana.

The Challenge

The lakeside settlements of the Municipality of Kozani have long suffered from a lack of adequate wastewater management infrastructure, resulting in the potential pollution of Polyphytos Lake and groundwater and the degradation of the natural environment.
The insufficient collection and treatment of urban wastewater posed a major threat to public health, the ecological balance of the area, and its development prospects, hindering opportunities for sustainable tourism and economic growth.

The Solution

Consortis undertook the development of a comprehensive wastewater management plan, which includes:

  • Hydraulic Studies: Design of wastewater collection and conveyance networks leading to the new and existing Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs).
  • WWTP Design Studies:
    • WWTP Elimeia – Capacity of 7,500 population equivalents; activated sludge process with extended aeration; recipient: Polyphytos Lake.
    • WWTP Rymnio – Compact activated sludge system for 238 residents; recipient: Polyphytos Lake.
    • WWTP Petrana – Compact activated sludge system for 950 residents; recipient: unnamed stream.
  • Pump Stations and Force Mains: Design and construction of two pump stations (AN1 – Kaisareia, AN2 – Agia Paraskevi) and pressurized pipelines for wastewater transfer.
  • Internal Sewer Networks: Development of gravity and collector systems with a total network length exceeding 20 kilometers.

Benefits

The implementation of the project will deliver significant benefits for both the local community and the environment:

  • Environmental Protection: Reduction of pollution and prevention of contamination in Polyphytos Lake and surrounding water bodies.
  • Public Health: Ensuring safe and hygienic living conditions for more than 8,600 residents.
  • Employment and Local Development: Creation of new jobs during the construction and operational phases.
  • Tourism and Economic Growth: Strengthening the local economy and encouraging sustainable tourism along the lakeside zone.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Full alignment with national and EU legislation on urban wastewater management and environmental protection.

The Wastewater Management Study for the Lakeside Settlements of the Municipality of Kozani represents a strategic investment in sustainable development.
It combines environmental protection with the improvement of residents’ quality of life, laying the foundations for a resilient and sustainable future for the Municipality of Kozani.
