Design and Development of Critical Road Infrastructure on Vertical Axis 30 of the Egnatia Motorway

Consortis is participating in the implementation of this strategic infrastructure project, undertaking the preparation of the detailed road design study for the section “Igoumenitsa – Nea Selefkia – Sagiada – Mavromati Border Station.”

The study begins at the end of the Igoumenitsa Bypass, at the planned grade-separated interchange of Igoumenitsa–Nea Selefkia, formed by the intersection of the Bypass with the Ioannina–Igoumenitsa National Road (E92). It extends to the vicinity of the existing roundabout at the Mavromati Customs Station, located at the Greek–Albanian border.

The total length of the road section under study is 26 kilometres, with its starting point on National Road 6 (Ioannina–Igoumenitsa).

Guided by respect for local conditions and a strong commitment to quality, Consortis contributes to the design of safe, functional, and modern road infrastructure, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting sustainable development.

The Challenge

National Road EO19 “Nea Selefkia – Sagiada – Mavromati Border Station” is a key transport corridor linking the settlements of Nea Selefkia, Kestrini, Ragio, Asprokklisi, and Sagiada with each other and with the city of Igoumenitsa. It also serves as a principal gateway between Greece and Albania.

Despite its strategic importance, the corridor suffers from outdated design characteristics, limited traffic management interventions, and significant deficiencies in infrastructure and road safety. These conditions result in increased accident risk, reduced traffic efficiency, and constraints on the area’s economic and developmental potential.

The Solution

The proposed upgrade of the Nea Selefkia – Sagiada – Mavromati Border Station road corridor addresses existing safety and operational challenges through modern engineering solutions and design standards.

The road is classified under Category AII of the Road Design Guidelines (OMOE-D – Cross Sections), ensuring full compliance with current road design and safety requirements.

The study provides for the upgrade of the entire 26 km corridor, adopting the β(2+41)ν* cross-section, in accordance with OMOE-D Circular 41.

For the central median, instead of the concrete “New Jersey” barrier specified in the Circular, a double-sided metal safety barrier is proposed. This solution offers enhanced protection for both carriageways and further improves overall road safety performance.

Benefits

The completion of the study and subsequent implementation of the project are expected to deliver substantial short- and long-term benefits, including:

  • Improved daily mobility for residents, professionals, and travelers, with reduced travel times and enhanced access to the border station.
  • Significant enhancement of road safety and traffic flow efficiency.
  • Strengthening of cross-border connectivity and regional economic activity.
  • Promotion of regional development through increased investment attractiveness.
  • Support for tourism and commercial growth, contributing to local prosperity.

Taking into account the specific characteristics of the area, Consortis combines technically sound and user-oriented solutions that respond to the needs of residents, professionals, and visitors, while contributing to an overall improvement in quality of life and economic vitality in the region.
