Transport Study for the Northern Ring Road of Kilkis

As part of the planning for the new Northern Ring Road of the city of Kilkis, Consortis contributes to the preparation of this transport study, which focuses on the alignment and organization of a new primary road corridor.

The scope of the project includes the development of a road with a total length of approximately 2 km, starting at the at-grade junction formed by 21is Iouniou Street and Konstantinou Karamanli Street, and terminating at Eleftheriou Venizelou Street, at the eastern boundary of the “Kampani” military camp in the city of Kilkis.

The road alignment runs along the perimeter of Agios Georgios Hill, one of the city’s most important areas for recreation and outdoor activities, taking into account both the functional requirements of the road network and the specific characteristics of the surrounding area.

The Challenge

The study area faces a strong need for traffic decongestion, as the existing road network struggles to accommodate increasing traffic volumes, particularly during peak hours. The lack of adequate roundabouts and appropriate geometric characteristics along existing road connections limits network functionality and safety, leading to delays, increased risks for drivers, and reduced accessibility to key urban areas. In addition, the existing service roads do not sufficiently meet the mobility needs of the area.

The Solution

The proposed approach includes the following key elements:

  • Analysis and evaluation of existing conditions, with the objective of defining measures to optimize traffic flow and parking, in line with current guidelines and best practices.
  • Design of the new ring road with a standard cross-section g2, in accordance with the Road Design Guidelines (OMOE-D – Cross Sections), featuring 3.50 m traffic lanes per direction and an additional 0.25 m guidance strip to enhance safety.
  • Design of the service roads with cross-section i2, in accordance with OMOE-D Circular 41, ensuring safe and smooth parallel traffic operation.
  • Design of roundabouts based on an articulated truck with a semi-trailer of 18 m length as the design vehicle.

Benefits

The new road network will provide smooth and predictable traffic flow, contributing decisively to the reduction of congestion and the enhancement of road safety, serving both permanent residents and visitors.

Consortis delivers the study in accordance with modern technical specifications, focusing on high standards of quality and innovation while addressing the specific needs and development prospects of Kilkis. Through integrated planning and effective design solutions, the project supports the sustainable improvement of the urban fabric and ensures the long-term viability of the infrastructure, for the benefit of the city and its residents.
